The Need to Work from Home
If you have searched and searched the net for ways to make money from the comfort of your own home, you are certainly not alone.
The desire to be at home is increasing, especially for parents of young children or lone parents. An income is essential, but flexibility is also needed. Relying on childcare or trying to pay for it is demanding and stressful. New approaches get looked at.
Online Writing
With the internet being so easily accessible and blogging so popular, people often look at ways to make a bit of money doing it. Success stories of getting thousands of hits per day and earning enough money through affiliates (such as signing up for Google Adsense) sound rather appealing. In fact, I won’t hide my envy. If only that many people were interested in what I had to say.
Giving the whole online writing thing a go could be a great idea. If you are good at it, disciplined and like to do your research, maybe finding some clients could be the way to go.
There are writing mills you can sign up for and sell content to. Textbroker or Constant Content will take you on if you can prove you have good grammar and spelling skills. But you have to put in the blood, sweat and tears to make something out of it, and you could be waiting weeks to get something sold.
Having that as a portfolio (as well as a website with your articles and blogs on) will give you a better chance in the long run. Just learn some SEO tricks as well.
I come across people all the time who have regular clients. I have also read success stories from those earning a nice profit from Adsense. It must be possible, but maybe not constant. I wouldn’t rely on it as a sole income.
Business Ventures
If you have a talent or skill there could be other ways to work from home. I was a childminder in my own home for a while. I was my own boss and didn’t have to rely on childcare.
If you want something a little more grown up, then what about home parties? Selling is the way to go if you can get a network around you.
Try Avon, Ann Summers, The Pampered Chef, Herbal life or Jamie at Home. There are hundreds – just choose what you are interested in. Clothing, makeup, home ware, health food – anything.
If selling isn’t for you, then try setting up these businesses. They won’t cost very much to set up:
- Computer Repair
- Dog walking
- Window Cleaning
- Cleaning
- Graphic Design
- CV Writing
- Seamstress
- Car Valeting
- Taxi Service
- Gardener
Being your own boss has many benefits. Although has it’s downsides too. You need to get the business off the ground, do your own tax and national insurance and liability insurance.
Promote your Business
Depending on what you choose to do, there are many ways to get clients.
Word of mouth. Talk to people everywhere you go, Let them know in conversation what you do, and they might know someone who will put clients your way.
Website. Always have a website. Update it daily, drive traffic to it, make it look good. You are a professional.
Cards. Have business cards with you at all times. You never know when someone will ask about you. Put cards advertising your business in shop windows too. Get yourself about.
Newspaper adverts. Get an advert in the paper. You never know.
